Nothing can come between the bond shared by Dwyane and Zaya Wade. On Tuesday’s episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Dwyane Wade proudly told the story of how his 12-year-old daughter announced to the family that she was ready to live her truth as a transgender person.
As the segment circulated, heaps of praise for Dwyane and wife Gabrielle Union poured in. People were elated to see parents who were genuinely accepting and ready to learn.
Later in the day, Gabrielle shared a video of a conversation between Dwyane and Zaya. “Meet Zaya,” she captioned the video. “She’s compassionate, loving, whip-smart and we are so proud of her. It’s okay to listen to, love, and respect your children exactly as they are. Love and light good people.”
The two discussed what kind of advice Zaya has for other youth on a journey to living as their authentic selves. Zaya hopes that people will be unafraid to be themselves.
“Don’t even think about that, you know, just be true to yourself,” Zaya said. “What’s the point of being on this earth if you’re going to try to be someone you’re not? It’s like, you’re not even living as yourself, which is the dumbest concept to me. Be true and don’t really care what the ‘stereotypical way’ of being you is.”
“I think and I know it can get tough, definitely,” Zaya continued. “But I think you push through and you be the best you … I think even through hard times, you gotta just push through. It’s worth it. I feel like it’s very worth it when you reach that point of yourself.”
“Feeling free,” Dwyane noted. “Feeling like you don’t have to hide.”
“Yeah,” Zaya affirmed. “Where you can look in the mirror and say, like, ‘Hi,’ to yourself. ‘Nice to meet you’ instead of, like, ‘I don’t really know who I am,’ like a full identity crisis.”
