Ooh, what a day Tommy Callaway is having!
In case you are not familiar with the name, Tommy Callaway is the youth minister and Boy Scout leader who took it upon himself to whack the behind of a female reporter, Alex Bozarjian.
Alex, who works for WSAV-TV, was at work doing her job when Tommy felt entitled to grope her. Her job, of course, is reporting the news, and Alex was busy telling listeners about the Enmarket Savannah Bridge Run when the offense took place.
Since the incident was captured live on-air, Tommy was pretty quickly identified. Bizarrely, he is attempting to explain that he didn’t mean to grope Alex. “I was getting ready to bring my hands up and wave to the camera, to the audience, and there was a misjudgment in character and decision-making,” he said.
“I touched her back. I did not know exactly where I touched her.”
The defense is questionable at best, considering that in the video it’s obvious that Tommy makes no move to raise his hands in the air and that Alex is jolted by his action. After the incident, Alex took to Twitter, where she wrote, “To the man who smacked my butt on live TV this morning: You violated, objectified, and embarrassed me. No woman should EVER have to put up with this at work or anywhere!! Do better.”
For his part, Tommy agrees. “I totally agree 100% with her statement. The two most important words were her last two words, ‘Do better,’ and that’s my intention. If I did see her facial reaction, I would’ve been embarrassed, felt ashamed, and I would’ve stopped, turned around, and apologized to her.”
It’s telling that it didn’t occur to Tommy to check on the person he assaulted in the moment — he just kept running his race.
