A parent is always an influential person in a child’s life, but the definition of what a parent really is differs from person to person.

Many lucky folks were raised by their biological parents, whom they love very much. But parental figures can help and guide a person in addition to or in place of his or her mom and dad. For adopted children, a parent isn’t necessarily related to them, but the people who raised them.

But it’s very clear who Katelyn Miller’s dad is. When she was 9 years old, her mother, a single parent of two kids, started dating a man named Lance and ultimately married him.

Eleven years later, she wrote her stepdad a letter about his choice, and how he had impacted her life.

“I was 9 years old when I met you, God sent my mother, brother, and I half-way across the united states to meet you,” she wrote in the letter, shared to the Facebook page Love What Matters. “Who knew my mother hand signaling her number to you across a hot, sweaty warehouse would end up in marriage. You two are perfect for each other. You show my mother the love she deserves.”

She added that she wouldn’t be the woman she is today without him because he was there for her every step of the way. He isn’t a father figure anymore, but the man she can call her dad.

She concluded the letter by surprising him with her decision: She was going to take his last name!

In the clip below, you can see the father’s touching reaction.
