Few songs are as timeless as Missy Elliott’s classic 2002 jam, “Work It.” Sixteen years later, most of us can still recite parts of the song from memory. But one woman’s rendition of “Work It” is beyond any you’ve ever seen.
In a video that is now massively viral, Mary Halsey sings the song at karaoke during a picnic. She flawlessly performs every single lyric, and she even includes a booty shake in the mix. In her right hand, Mary holds a shofar horn. While she sings, her pal dances around in the background while slurping what appears to be a cup of noodles.
Millions of people viewed Mary’s performance, because it’s amazing. And soon enough, Missy Elliott herself caught wind of it.
“She straight killed ‘Work It’ sound effects & all,” Missy tweeted.
Mary is an assistant at a nursing and rehab facility as well as a beloved community figure, Forward reports. She is also, apparently, a karaoke queen. That’s “Miss Mary” to you.
Mary performed the song during a picnic at Goddard Park in Rhode Island, where she lives and works.
She began by proclaiming herself a “funky white sista,” then proceeded to actually nail every lyric — with matching dance moves.
The video racked up over 7 million views. Eventually, Missy Elliott herself saw it, and her reaction is priceless.
“I just found out I have a FUNKY WHITE SISTER😳😩😂 forreal doe😂,” Missy tweeted.
Then she pointed out the costar of the show: Mary’s dancing friend with the food.
“Wait her friend has a cup of oodles & noodles tipping in the back I think! Lord! Go awwwwf🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🔥🤣,” Missy added.
Indeed, the friend was back there supporting from beginning to end.
They even came up with a term for it.
And of course, people cannot get enough of Mary.
They’re also not that surprised.
And they really appreciate her dance moves.
They’ll never forget them.
And they will also never forget the shofar that Mary is holding — an ancient Jewish instrument.
And because Mary is a known member of the community, some folks actually recognized the performance from the video.
What a blessing Mary is. Excuse me while I sing “Work It” for the rest of the day.
Check out the performance for yourself!
