Maria Adams had been on her morning walk when she saw 27 dogs that seemed to have been abandoned.
She was completely stunned.
Maria had been walking along when she passed a vacant lot on her way. At least, she thought it was vacant. Five puppies were inside a milk crate while the other 22 were apparently left to frolic around the lot on their own.
Maria knew she couldn’t just leave them there. She ran back home to get her car.
She returned and opened the doors of her car while using beef jerky to try and lure the dogs inside. “Once I got the three biggest ones in there, all the little ones came,” she recalled.
Maria then raced to the Ramona Humane Society where she was able to flag down an animal control officer. Understandably, the man couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw the inside of her car.
“He looked at me. He looked at my car. It was just full of dogs!” She went into the shelter and informed more workers of the situation. They asked her how many were in her car and Maria didn’t even know herself at that point; she just knew she had to save them.
The dogs were taken in by the shelter and are currently being cared for.
Maria hopes they’ll find forever homes with loving owners as soon as possible.
