In 2014, Jessica Ashworth and her husband Paul were settling into married life. They were excited to begin traveling before starting a family.
But before their new life could begin, Jessica decided to undergo a tremendous transformation. The nurse from Oklahoma weighed 341 pounds and was all set to receive gastric bypass surgery that would allow her and Paul to do things they never could before.
Following the procedure, Jessica woke up in the hospital and realized Paul never texted her like he was supposed to. Worried, she sent a friend over to their home to see if he was there.
Jessica learned that on the same day as her gastric bypass surgery, her husband had suffered a fatal heart attack and died in his sleep at the age of 30. His family had a history of heart problems.
Jessica could have spiraled out of control, but she didn’t. Instead, she took the tragic loss as an opportunity to live life to the fullest.
The now-widow made a list of all the things she and Paul never got to do because of her weight, like riding roller coasters, sky diving and going on outdoor adventures.
Jessica also began flying on airplanes, something she never did before because she didn’t want the humiliation of having to wear a seat-belt extender. But with newly acquired airline tickets in one hand and Paul’s ashes in the other, Jessica began traveling across the world. She sprinkled his ashes all the way from the Smoky Mountains to the Bahamas. Little by little, something incredible began to take place both inside and out.
