Think really, really hard: Is there anything better than a grilled cheese sandwich?

First of all, they’re easy as pie to make. No, they’re easier than pie. Much easier, actually! Second, they’re sandwiches filled with cheese. I don’t think you really need any more bullet points than that.

Now there’s nothing wrong with a good old-fashioned grilled cheese with American cheese on white bread. There is also nothing wrong with enjoying one stuffed with a fancy smoked Gruyère on seedy whole wheat bread with sautéed garlic spinach. My mouth is watering even thinking about that one.

But there are also much less conventional ways to make a grilled cheese sandwich amazing — you just have to think outside the box a little. Some of these clever folks have found truly genius ideas that are totally worth a try.

Ahead you will find 10 simple and brilliant ways to make your grilled cheese even better. Fair warning, though, you may not be able to look at a simple sandwich the same way again.

Why use bread when you can use a doughnut?

All you have to do is cut the doughnut in half, butter up the flat edges, and place those on the griddle. Layer cheese on and grill away.

If you love tater tots, fill a waffle iron with the crunchy goodness, grill, and repeat. Then grill the sandwich panini style and you’ve got yourself quite the cheesy potato treat.

You can add some extra ingredients such as bacon or jalapeños, like Spoon University did.

5. Try A Cheesy Crust

Excessive? There’s no such thing when it comes to grilled cheese!

Use an egg mixture to coat the outside of your sandwich, add bread crumbs, then grill away.

Look, if you’re going to have a sandwich filled with cheese and slathered in butter, you might as well take it one step further and fry it.

YouTube user yellowsaffron chose to pan-fry a mozzarella sandwich, but if you have access to a deep fryer, go right ahead and use that, following all safety precautions, of course.

8. Fill It With Mac And Cheese

This really needs no explanation. Honestly, I’m ashamed I wasn’t the first one to think of putting one cheesy dish inside another.

Most bagels just end up in a toaster, but Cultural Chromatics decided to grill their bagel with plenty of cheese inside it.
