In October of 1991, Karen Patterson of Piscataway, New Jersey, went into labor with her son while out shopping. She managed to make it back home to her husband.

The frantic couple made two phone calls: one to 911 and the other to their doctor. After a rookie cop arrived at Karen’s home, the doctor guided him and Karen’s husband through the unexpected birth of baby Michael.

Michael grew up to become a trooper with the state police. Four years into the job, he was patrolling a Jersey neighborhood when he stopped a car for a tinted window violation. The pair got to talking, and the driver mentioned he used to be a police officer in Piscataway. He remembered the street on which he was pulled over and a particular house nearby.

What happened next is either a strong coincidence or touch of fate. “We’re not sure what the odds are of this happening — maybe they’re close to the odds of a hole-in-one, winning the lottery, or being struck by lightning — but it happened,” New Jersey State Police wrote on Facebook.

Watch below to see how things came full circle between Michael and the mystery driver.
