The world lost yet another music icon yesterday.
Tom Petty died at the age of 66 last night. It was reported by TMZ earlier on October 2, 2017, that the “Free Fallin'” singer had been found in full cardiac arrest and rushed to the hospital.
But there was some confusion regarding when he actually passed away, with an initial report prematurely confirming that he had died midday.
In a statement posted to the musician’s official Twitter account, longtime manager of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Tony Dimitriades clarified that he had “died peacefully at 8:40 p.m. PST, surrounded by family, his bandmates, and friends” after he couldn’t be revived.
While fans around the world are devastated to learn of his passing, I can’t even imagine the grief his family and friends are feeling.
Tom Petty’s daughter, AnnaKim Violette Petty, took to Instagram to share a series of emotional posts throughout the day while her dad was hospitalized, both before and after he died.

AnnaKim is the youngest of Tom’s children with his first wife, Jane Benyo.
Tom and Jane married in 1974 and divorced in 1996. Their union produced two daughters — Adria, a director, and AnnaKim, an artist.
AnnaKim shared the first of many tributes to her dad shortly after news of his hospitalization broke. “We love u,” she captioned a personal photo of them.
“We are all a mirror of divine love,” she captioned another photo posted shortly afterward.
In the second photo, which appears to have been taken recently, the rocker is wearing sunglasses and smiling widely while posing with AnnaKim.
“I love you my angel,” she wrote alongside an old photo of her dad.
It’s clear that AnnaKim was emotional while holding vigil at her dad’s bedside. In the midst of posting about him and about his legacy, she railed against news outlets for prematurely reporting his death.
She also asked the public for privacy and respect from strangers during this difficult time.
In a particularly heartbreaking pair of posts, AnnaKim revealed that her dad had matching stage clothes made for her when she was a kid. One jacket, made by Glen Palmer from the famous 1970s boutique Granny Takes a Trip, still fits her.
When AnnaKim got the call to come to the hospital after her dad’s medical emergency, she grabbed the jacket and was still wearing it while they waited at his bedside.
“96 tears was the first song my dad taught me to play, thank you for all the love, this has been the longest day of my life,” she captioned a photo of herself in tears while wearing the jacket at the hospital.
She also shared a shot of herself in her father’s hospital room.
In the midst of this difficult day, Tom’s youngest took a moment to recall a happier childhood memory.
“As a child, MTV was my news. I woke up to my parents in bed, me sleeping on a sheep skin rug on the floor. This video was always on. It was surreal to see. I love you mad hatter,” she captioned a still from one of her father’s music videos.
When the news of his passing was officially confirmed, AnnaKim shared a photo of her dad in his younger days.

“RIP,” his daughter captioned the picture.
In one post, alongside a darkened solo shot of herself, AnnaKim posted a lengthy tribute about what it meant to her to have Tom Petty for a dad.
One week ago today I was watching my dad play. We showed up rushed to our seats[…]sat watching realizing I grew up on these songs. Everyone grew up on these songs.
This is real American Art made from the roots of real people who deeply love life. My father loves music more than anything and always put music first. It’s going to be healing to know I will never go a day without hearing his music.
I love his class honesty and how strange and funny he is. Tom Petty is an American Icon because his heart has always put human rights first. We are one. I love you dad your songs are dreams manifested

The heartbroken daughter also shared a personal snapshot of the two from when she was a baby, calling them “Twin Stars.” She later shared a screenshot of the lyrics for his song “Alright for Now,” thanking her followers and her dad’s fans for all the love.
