To portray the most wholesome human being to ever live, Hollywood went out and hired the most wholesome actor of our generation.
Tom Hanks has been slated to play Mr. Rogers in an upcoming film about the late television personality, and the first picture of him in costume has been released to the public!
Fred Rogers was many things — a minister, puppeteer, and fierce advocate of education, just to name a few — but he was best known for Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, a children’s show that ran from 1968 until 2001. He was an absolute icon to anyone who grew up during those years, and he was honored with too many awards and recognitions to list. Fred died in 2003, two years after he left television.
To honor his legacy, Sony Pictures is making a film about his later years, specifically focusing on his relationship with a journalist who was writing a story about him in 1998. And when you think about it, there really was only one man worthy of playing the iconic Mr. Rogers…
Fact: The world does not deserve Tom Hanks.
Has there ever been a more universally beloved actor in Hollywood history?
You can’t honestly claim that you’ve ever met a single person who’s said, “Man, I really hate Tom Hanks.” Because it’s literally impossible to not like the guy.
And these pictures from his Instagram further prove that he’s the greatest man on earth. Seriously, this fuzzy selfie (can you imagine a Kardashian posting something like this?) further cements him as our favorite human ever.
Not only is he wholesome in real life, but Tom is a delight on screen.
Who can forget Forrest Gump? Have you ever rooted for a character so hard in your life? That’s the intangible magic Tom brings to any character he plays.
It was impossible to go to the movies in the ’90s and not see him next to Meg Ryan. Sleepless in Seattle was probably their most famous flick, but You’ve Got Mail and Joe Versus the Volcano weren’t bad either.
We could list his movies for days on end, but we’re ending with Turner & Hooch because, c’mon, he’s posing with a dog!
The point is, every single breath Tom Hanks takes is likable, so he’s the perfect man for this new project.
Sony couldn't have handled this announcement any better:
But that’s not what you’re here to see — ready for the picture?!
Red sweater. Khakis. Sneakers. A smile that you can’t help but love.
If this doesn’t warm your cold, detached heart, something is officially wrong with you!
Fans of both Tom Hanks and Mr. Rogers are going understandably nuts at the reveal.
This is a great take, because while it’s such an obviously perfect choice now, how many of us would have thought to take the guy from The Da Vinci Code and turn him into Mr. Rogers?
Some are pointing out that Tom has already played Walt Disney as well — but who cares? For our money, Tom should be playing every beloved nonfictional character for the rest of his life.
You won’t find a negative comment about his casting anywhere online — this is a unanimous home run!
And of course, for those who can't express their feelings with words, there are always gifs.
Tears seem to be a common reaction, considering how huge a role Mr. Rogers played in so many people’s childhoods.
On top of this just being a great casting choice, many are now rooting for the film itself. A successful run at the box office would further cement Fred Rogers’ already ironclad reputation as a legend.
So no pressure, Mr. Hanks/Rogers — don’t let us down!
