One fateful day in 1995, Maria had no idea that her boyfriend took off with their 18-month-old son, Steve, while she was at work. They were suddenly gone without a trace.
Maria’s boyfriend also took all of their family photos with him. All she had left of her son was a single, grainy black-and-white photograph.
Cops spent years looking for Steve, but after 20 years, the case was cold. Maria, however, clung to hope that one day they would be reunited.
The chances were slim to none.
In February 2016, after countless leads and tips that ended in disappointment, investigators received a highly credible tip that Steve Hernandez was indeed alive and living in Puebla, Mexico — and that his father had disappeared and was likely deceased.
But the police weren’t 100% sure this was actually Steve… and they didn’t want to scare him off. So, they “used a ruse and told Steve we were conducting an investigation related to the disappearance of his father.”
It didn’t take long to confirm this was Maria’s son. He told authorities he knew he had been abducted, but he didn’t know why. And he also believed Maria had abandoned him as a little boy; so much of his life had been a lie, but the truth was finally unraveling.
Twenty-one years later, Maria got a knock on the door. It was the cops — and they were there to drop a bombshell.
