When Tim McGraw decided to drop out of school and pursue a career in music, there was no way he could know what the future had in store for him.

Still, he decided the risk would be worth it if it meant doing something he loved.

Most parents want the best for their kids, and encourage them to stay in school because of that. But Tim’s mom had a totally different reaction when he broke the news to her.

In an appearance on Oprah’s Master Class, which you can see below, the country legend reveals that his mom wasn’t angry at him when he told her he was thinking about dropping out of school to work on his music.

Instead, she said she was surprised he hadn’t done it sooner.

With his mom’s blessing, Tim says he sold off everything he owned, including things like his water skis and his shotguns, and made enough money to get a bus ticket to Nashville. He arrived in the country music capital at 4 a.m. and says he “never looked back.”

“I knew that I wanted to do this no matter what happened,” Tim confesses. “If I was gonna be playing in a club and barely making my rent, or if I was gonna be playing in front of 100,000 people, I didn’t care — I was gonna be playing music.”

Thankfully, Tim’s gamble really paid off!
