One day Candace was at home watching television like she usually did. There was a segment with Tarek El Moussa from HGTV’s Flip or Flop. Moussa was discussing his battle with thyroid cancer on The Doctors.

Moussa’s interview was followed by a simple technique to detect the signs of thyroid cancer. Audience members drank a glass of water, tilted their head back, and checked to see if their thyroid’s bulged out of their neck. This would allow you to see if the thyroid was swollen.

Not thinking much of it, Candace decided to do the fun little check-up at home. She went into the kitchen, grabbed a glass of water, then looked in the mirror.

She couldn’t believe it; her thyroid was swollen. She remembered the other symptoms like weight gain, thinning hair, and fatigue, but she assumed she had them from her recent pregnancy.

Candace would ignore the symptoms for two months before going to a doctor. An ultrasound revealed that her thyroid was cancerous and eventually she would have to have much of it surgically removed. The mother now credits the TV show segment for saving her life.

“I’ve been in remission for a year and a half,” she revealed on the show.

She now had her blood tested every three months and annually scans her thyroid, but is recovering nicely.
