Teen Tears Up Thanking Strangers Who Chased Down Thief That Attacked Her As She Left Work

by Lindsey Smith
Lindsey is from Florida and has worked in online and print media. Her happy place is Michaels craft store.

Nineteen-year-old Olivia was leaving her retail job in Las Vegas just after midnight on January 7, 2018, when the unthinkable happened.

Out of nowhere, a man forcefully grabbed her arm and demanded that she hand over her purse. “I was like, ‘This only happens to people in movies,’ you know?” she told KTNV Las Vegas. “I was shocked at first.”

Olivia told the attacker that she would not give up her purse. Her refusal caused him to punch her in the face. In that moment, Olivia decided she would fight back and also began to scream.

“I just started screaming as loud as I could, thinking maybe someone has to hear me,” Olivia said.

Luckily, people did hear her screaming and strangers jumped into action to help the teen. “People ran after him because I could hear the footsteps,” she explained.

The teen wasn’t able to learn anything about her heroes after they chased the thief off. “I would really like to thank them, because I know it could’ve been a lot worse,” she said through tears.

Olivia managed to get away with a bruised arm and bloodied lip. She said she will no longer walk to her car alone at night. Police are investigating the incident, and she hopes the thief is caught.
