First-Year Teacher Greets Students With ‘This Little Light Of Mine’ Every Morning

Every morning as the buses pull up in front of Bresnahan Elementary School in Newburyport Port, Massachusetts, there is music. Gardner Rulon-Miller, the school’s music teacher, serenades the kids with a song as they arrive on their bikes and step off the school buses.

Gardner says a song can set the tone for your whole day. He wants music to be part of both their personal and school lives. There’s music at the grocery store and in the bank, so why not when you get off the school bus?

“It fills me up with happiness,” one young student says.

With songs like “This Little Light of Mine,” Gardner helps kids start the day with a smile. He believes small things like a song can turn your whole day around, transforming a bad day into a good one.

As the students walk into their classrooms, they are ready to learn with a song in their hearts.

This is Gardner’s first year teaching at Bresnahan Elementary School, and greeting the kids in the morning is helping him learn all their names. When it gets colder later in the fall, he plans to take his morning act inside.

I love this concept and definitely think it would brighten my day. What do you think?
