When you think of the most grueling sports, what comes to mind? Maybe football, with all the head bashing and horrendous injuries that result from said head bashing.
Maybe you’re a little more European and think of rugby, which is vaguely similar to American football, only they don’t wear helmets. Perhaps you think of long-distance running, when athletes run for 26 miles, blistered and chaffed by the end of it.
One sport you probably don’t think of is synchronized swimming.
The competitors wear bright, sometimes very silly outfits with tons of makeup. They elegantly dance in a pool in perfect unison, making it look easy as pie.
But think back to the last time you were in a pool. How graceful were you, really? Think of the resistance from the water, and how hard it is to hold your breath for more than just a few moments.
Are you reconsidering adding synchronized swimming to your list of grueling sports?
It belongs on that list right up there with ballet, gymnastics, and ice skating. I swear, you try to be a fraction as graceful simply walking as these athletes are performing huge feats of strength and control.
When this U.K. team marches out to the pool, you already know that it’s going to be a good show based on their outfits alone. But when the music starts? I couldn’t look away! the best part might be how much fun they’re having.
