A recent Apple advertisement that’s been airing has pinpointed that we have more information about ourselves on our phones than in our homes.
Our phones can record the way we sleep, our heart rate, our steps per day, and our saved credit cards. For many, the smartphone has become an essential tool. That’s why the thought of being without our phones is so terrifying.
Adelphi University professor Donna M. Freitas runs a course for freshmen that is focused around the concept of letting go. It’s called First Year Seminar: Life Unplugged. Professor Freitas also joins in by giving up her phone for a week, showing that adults of all ages can form attachment issues.
One of the biggest challenges is dealing with the mental aspect of phone addiction. Quite often, we’re immersed in a screen, unaware of the world around us. By giving up our phones, it’s almost like there’s something missing. But the truth of the matter is, life can become a lot simpler without our phones around. The students quickly learned that there were easy ways to adapt. One student, in particular, started using a watch instead of his phone as a method of telling time and took class notes the old-fashioned way — with a pen and paper.
It’s amazing to think about how quickly the world has changed and how much technology has interfered with the way we figure out the time and communicate with friends. Inside Edition filmed the teens before and after the week-long experiment. What they found out is actually a little shocking.
