In 2017, Father’s Day fell on June 18. For many people, this meant spending the day celebrating Dad and everything he does for the family.
During this holiday, some people decide to go out for brunch, others make Dad a batch of yummy treats (like DIY bacon salt), while others just let Dad sleep in.
Most dads really want one thing for Father’s Day, though: to be reminded of how much their children love them.
No matter how the kids do this — whether it’s through a handmade card, a sweet gift, or a home-cooked meal — dads just want to feel extra love on Father’s Day.
Many of us with traditional families forget that Father’s Day may mean something different for other people. For some, Father’s Day could be a celebration of a dad who passed away. It could also honor a grandfather, or another important father figure.
For one little girl, Father’s Day meant telling her stepdad that, even though he wasn’t there at the beginning of her life, he’ll be her dad until the end.
One little girl understands how important Father’s Day is, even if her family isn’t the most traditional.
Her stepdad, who has been in her life for a year, told her she could call him anything — so she called him by his name.
But this Father’s Day, she gave him a card that changed everything.
The front of the card said, “To: Dad, From: Emma.”
Emma’s stepdad was confused, because she never calls him “Dad.” When he opened the card, he understood why it said “To: Dad” on the outside.
Inside, it said, “Surprise, I am going to call you dad from now on!”
She also included a handmade drawing of him teaching her about archery, a recent family activity.
Emma’s stepdad posted photos of the card on Imgur, a photo-sharing site, where he wrote:
I married her Mom last year and have made it a point that she can call me whatever she wants.
She told her Mom a couple weeks ago that she wanted to start calling me Dad and decided to tell me on Father’s Day so it would be extra special.
Everyone who saw the pictures on Imgur loved it.
One person commented, “You’ve undoubtedly earned the title and you’re entitled to be proud of that.”
Another person wrote, “Some of the best dads are chosen, not made. Good for you. Happy Father’s day. You’ve clearly earned it!”
And another said, “This is the highest of privileges. Don’t make her regret it. Congrats, you are a good dude.”
Yet another commenter shared: “As a fellow stepdad, I applaud you and your little girl’s relationship. Happy Father’s day.”
Meanwhile, someone else wrote: “Congrats man! Happy Father’s Day! I can’t understand fully. That has to be extra special for a child to want you as a Dad! Good luck mate!”
This is so sweet — Emma’s stepdad should be so proud.
