11 Classic Soda Shop Drink Recipes That Will Take You Back To A Simpler Time

by Jess Catcher
Jess grew up in Oklahoma before moving to New York to become a writer. She has a cat named Agnes.

Though they aren’t quite as popular as they were back in the day, you just can’t beat the refreshing feeling of chugging one of these old-fashioned soda shop drinks!

The delicious beverages are the perfect way to cool down on a hot day, or just enjoy when you’re feeling a bit nostalgic for a simpler time. Plus, most of them have names that are so much more fun than just saying “milkshake” over and over again.

Even though I wasn’t alive when these drinks had their heyday, I’ve always loved looking back at old recipes folks enjoyed in the past and whipping them up for me and my friends.

It’s just so fun to imagine what it would have been like to waltz up to the counter and order a “catawaba flip” or “Bronx egg cream” at one of the soda shops or drug stores.

Take a look at these scrumptious recipes and let us know in the comments if you remember enjoying a few of these yourself in the past.

And don’t forget to SHARE with your friends!

1. Black Cow

This popular order is similar to a root beer float, but a little fancier.

2 scoops vanilla ice cream
10 oz. root beer
1 Tbsp. chocolate syrup
1 1/2 oz. whipped cream
Maraschino cherries

Scoop the ice cream into a large glass and pour the root beer over, then add the chocolate syrup, whipped cream, and cherries.

This fruity, fizzy drink would totally hit the spot on a hot summer day.

3/4 oz. fresh lime juice
1 oz. simple syrup

6 to 8 oz. club soda

Combine the lime juice, syrup, and bitters. Mix well, then pour club soda over the top. You can also garnish with a lime peel.

3. Catawba Flip

I thought this was another drink known as the “purple cow,” but the egg makes it totally unique.

1 scoop vanilla ice cream
1 large egg
2 oz. grape juice or syrup
Shaved ice

Add the ice cream, egg, grape juice or syrup, and shaved ice into a blender. Blend until completely smooth, then pour the seltzer over the mixture.

4. Bronx Egg Cream

Egg cream drink

According to the folks at Prairie Moon, to make this drink really authentic, one should wipe their mouth with their sleeve when done!

2 Tbsps. chocolate syrup
5 oz. milk
3 oz. seltzer water

Mix together the syrup and milk, then add in the seltzer while you’re still stirring until completely mixed.

5. Ice Cream Soda

I love how these old-fashioned drinks used seltzer or club soda with different syrups more often than already flavored soda.

2 oz. syrup (any flavor)
Seltzer or club soda
1 to 2 scoops vanilla ice cream

Pour the syrup into a tall glass, then fill halfway with the seltzer or club soda. Add the ice cream and stir vigorously until foamy, then fill the rest of the glass with more seltzer or club soda.

6. Soda Fountain Phosphate

The acid phosphate gives this refreshing drink a little extra zip.

2 oz. of syrup (any flavor)
10 oz. carbonated water
2 to 3 shakes of acid phosphate (or 1/2 to 1 tsp.)

Mix all of the ingredients together in a 12 oz. glass, then just add ice.

7. Burn One All The Way

This chocolate malt gets its name from old soda jerk lingo for making a milkshake into a malt.

4 scoops chocolate ice cream
2 oz. chocolate syrup
2 Tbsps. malted milk powder
1/4 cup milk

Add all of the ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. For a thinner malt, add more milk; for a thicker one, add more ice cream.

8. White Cow

White cow drink

It’s pretty much just a vanilla milkshake, but you have to admit the name is much more delightful.

4 scoops vanilla ice cream
2 oz. vanilla syrup
1/4 cup milk

Simply add all of the ingredients into a blender and blend until completely mixed. Add more or less milk for your preferred thickness.

9. Brown Cow

Pour the syrup into the bottom of a glass and top with cola, leaving two inches of space at the top. Add ice cream.
