I’ve always been fascinated by elephants. The beautiful creatures are often misunderstood due to their massive size and, sadly, frequently find themselves as the victim of poaching. Whether they were the unlucky target or become orphaned when their parents are taken, too many elephants suffer from the horrible practice.
That’s why organizations like the Elephant Nature Park in Thailand are so important for maintaining this amazing species. Led by Lek Chailert, she welcomes those victims as well as those that have gotten very old, have been rescued from a circus, or are in any other circumstance they might need sanctuary from. Watching Chailert interact with her elephants shows just how much she truly cares for their survival.
One cutie in particular, a female named Faa Mai, clearly has a lot of affection for Chailert as well. As the first elephant born rather than rescued and brought into the facility, the two have formed an endearingly close bond. You can see that as Faa Mai brings her favorite human in for a hug in the clip below!
Now that she’s older and much, much bigger, Faa Mai still acts like just like she did as a baby when she hears Chailert sing her a lullaby. The adorable pachyderm can’t help but feel completely soothed by the sweet tune, gently allowing herself to slump onto the ground and close her eyes. Chailert swats away any bugs that might bother her precious girl as she drifts away into slumber. Curling up right alongside her, Chailert looks just as content as her sleepy pal.
