We all get tired of the 9-to-5 sometimes, but most people don’t act on their grand ideas to pack up and travel instead of succumbing to a traditional lifestyle.

But that’s exactly what one brave woman did, and she didn’t do it alone — she took her 11-year-old son. Crissy Whalin, a single mom from Southern California, had a regular corporate job. She spent her days working, commuting in Los Angeles traffic, and taking care of her son, Zephyr. But she decided she was tired of the LA lifestyle. Now she and Zephyr have a very different kind of life. The single mom and her son are traveling the world together on a budget.

Crissy made the decision after she lost her job as a radio talk show host, she said. She worked side gigs to save money, then the pair took off. They’ve been traveling the world for about 18 months now. “I’m showing my son the world, not showing him an extended holiday,” she said of their journey.

People might think it sounds pretty unconventional, but it seems like a great bonding experience. Plus, in addition to the education her son is likely getting by seeing so many different places, like Germany and Singapore, he also takes classes online. They’ve been to every continent expect Antarctica. Crissy uses her laptop to work two different jobs, which is not unlike what many people do these days. She just does it from just about everywhere.
