An X Factor contestant left judge Simon Cowell in a state fans aren’t used to seeing.

Josh Daniel, 21, auditioned for the U.K. show with Labrinth’s “Jealous,” a song he dedicated to his best friend who’d passed away in 2013.

“The lyrics kind of say I’m jealous that you’re happy without me,” Daniel explained. “And I kind of see it in the sense that I’m jealous that he’s now happy in heaven, that he’s moved on to a better place, and that I can’t still be with him.”

As the contestant passionately performed the heart-wrenching lyrics, Cowell became emotional and even shed a few tears. While we’ve seen Cowell commend contestants for their performance before, like the breathtaking 160-plus-piece Welsh choir, it’s very rare to see him get this emotional.

According to Hello, this particular audition was filmed shortly after Cowell’s mother had passed away on July 5, 2015, at the age of 89. That could explain why his emotions lingered even after the performance, as you’ll see at the 7:30 mark.

Daniel, who received a standing ovation from the audience, also left judge Cheryl Ann Tweedy, then known as Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, in tears.

“That was the most captivated I’ve been in all the auditions so far,” she said.
