Five Signs You’re Wearing The Wrong Bra Size

Amber is the Branded Content Editor at LittleThings. She currently resides in Manhattan.

For women, bras are the most essential item of a wardrobe — but did you know that a whopping 80 percent get it wrong and are actually wearing the wrong size? Every figure is unique and different, so finding a bra that fits you well makes all the difference. Plus, when your bra fits properly, you’ll instantly look better in your clothes. And don’t fret if you realize you need to buy new bras. Fortunately, you can clear out space in your top dresser drawer by donating your gently worn bras to Soma’s bi-annual Bra Donation. Bras are the most needed, yet least donated clothing item for women. Soma has teamed up with the National Network to End Domestic Violence to collect and distribute over 1 million bras to local shelters for women who have been impacted by domestic violence.  (And if there is no Soma located near you, visit soma.com/givebras for details on where you can ship them.) Refreshing your wardrobe has never felt so good! Here are a few signs to look for when determining if you’re wearing the correct bra size.

The Perfect Fit

The Perfect Fit

Learn how a perfectly fitting bra should look and feel. Go through our checklist to make sure you are wearing the right size.

1. Cups

The cups should be closely contoured to your body. Pro Tip: If your cups gap or pucker, your cup size is either too big or you need a style with less coverage. If you overflow or have bulging at the top or sides of the cups, your cups are either too small or you need a style with more coverage.

2. Front

The front of the bra should lay flat against your skin. Pro Tip: If the center front is lifting off your skin, the cups are too small.

3. Straps

Straps should be comfortable and stay in place. Pro Tip: If they dig into your skin, the bra is too tight. You should be able to slip a finger between your shoulder and strap.

4. Underwire

The underwire should provide support and be comfortable against your skin. Pro Tip: The underwire should sit on your ribcage, encasing your breasts – not digging into them. If it is uncomfortable, you’re wearing a bra that’s too small.

5. Band

A correctly sized band will fit snug around you and not ride up in the back. Pro Tip: If the band is riding up and you can run more than two fingers under it, your band is too big. If the band feels tight when standing or sitting, your band is too small. Realize you’re wearing the wrong bra size?
