Neighbors of Dr. Wayne Gangi, a New Jersey-based dentist, have gotten used to his ever-changing lawn displays, which can be quite colorful and eccentric depending on the theme.
Wayne’s latest garden scene, however, caused a bigger stir than usual. Posing on the lawn of his practice was a group of full-sized female mannequins wearing lingerie, wigs, and bunny ears while holding baskets full of eggs.
Since the display went up around Easter time, many local residents assumed it was related to Easter. However, Wayne says he erected the scene in honor of the late Hugh Hefner, in celebration of what would have been his 93rd birthday.
Regardless of his intention, neighbors called the display “distasteful and disrespectful.” One local mom, Desiree Mozek, was particularly angry and offended. She has a teenage son, and she didn’t think the display was appropriate for him to see.
Reporters from WPIX went to check out the lawn display and were met in person by Desiree. She had arrived, armed with garden shears, fully prepared to dismantle Wayne’s setup while he was away. Despite the fact that it was his property and she would face fines for her actions, she proceeded to destroy the “sexy” scenery.
When Wayne returned to his office, he saw his display had been dismantled and his mannequins had been destroyed — and he wasn’t about to sit back and do nothing.
