The Detroit Police Department recently entered what they thought was an abandoned home. With a search warrant in hand, the officers were initially looking for drugs.

But as the narcotics investigators looked around, what they found was much more horrifying.

There was no heat, no working toilet and no windows — but there were seven children who lived among the filth and squalor. The kids ranged in age from 9 months to 9 years old.

There were no beds… feces covered the floor… a deceased dog was rotting inside… and two guns were also found. Detroit Police Lt. Johnathan Parnell said the scene was the worst case of child neglect he’d seen in his 28 years of law enforcement.

The news crew from FOX 2 went to inspect the house for the story, then discovered a mysterious woman inside. However, she refused to answer any questions.

For the most part, the neighbors were completely stunned and didn’t think anyone actually lived there. But there were red flags.

On one occasion, a neighbor named Diana noticed a child. “I seen a little boy,” she told FOX. “I don’t know how old he was — maybe about 5 or 6 — in the window. He had no shirt on and I just know it was cold that day. I just said, wow — but I didn’t know. I haven’t seen nobody in a while,” she said.

All seven kids were taken to the hospital and are now in the care of Child Protective Services. The children’s father was reportedly taken into custody, though their mother has not been arrested.

Thankfully, the children are now safe from harm’s way.
