Selma Blair has been very open and honest when it comes to her battle with multiple sclerosis. Selma was diagnosed in August of last year and revealed that diagnosis two months later.
Since then, she’s kept fans in the loop on what her day-in/day-out battle with the illness has looked like.
Selma underwent a round of treatment this summer. She also shaved her head, which is a pretty big adjustment for anyone. Factor in all of the weird notions regarding celebrities and beauty and you can imagine how that would all take its toll on a person.
Selma decided to take on the idea that bald women are somehow less feminine with a cheeky photo.
In the picture, Selma is wearing nothing but a pink-and-green top by Thom Browne as she gazes at herself in the mirror. In one hand, she holds a crab-shaped purse so that it covers her lower half. With the other hand, she touches her shaved head.
Selma Blair spent her summer focusing on her health and happiness. The 47-year-old actress was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis last August. She went public with her diagnosis in October in an Instagram post.
Since then, Selma has been very open about what living with MS on a day-to-day basis looks like. Her posts are a raw and honest look into what dealing with a less-visible illness is really like, including how it impacts her as a parent.
Selma told People that she’s very open with 8-year-old son Arthur Saint Bleick as well. “He’s had to endure a lot; he’s seen a lot,” she noted, including seeing her run to the bathroom when she’s feeling unwell — or fall down the stairs.
Thankfully, Arthur is a very understanding child. He admires his mother’s strength and keeps a positive mentality that has to be uplifting during a tough time. “He says, ‘Mommy’s not sick. Mommy’s brave,'” Selma noted.
Selma has spent a lot of time reflecting on how the dynamic between herself and her son has changed and how she cherishes everything she has with him. She posted a photo of them lying together and wrote, “As a mom, whether strong or not so strong, I hope I can be with this child as he needs me or wants me. This is the best it gets for me.”
“Right now, I save the light I have to laugh with this one. To feel the whole day and night,” she continued. “But when I recover, when the bone marrow makes the amount this body needs when I rebalance my body and Re learn, I will be more present with all those I cherish.”
Selma finished her latest round of treatment in late July, which she celebrated on Instagram. “Today is a banner day. I am being discharged from the care of an incredible team of nurses and techs and a visionary Dr. who believes in my healing as much as I do. This has been a process. And will continue to be one,” she wrote.
“I am immunocompromised for next three months at least. So no kisses please. I wanted to make sure any complications that might arise here were my private space. And we got through brilliantly,” she added.
While in recovery, Selma has done the best she can to keep her spirits up. For her, that means a lot of time with Arthur and a few close friends. It can be hard to enjoy yourself when you’re still regaining strength, but Selma has been patient with her nonlinear journey.
While Selma does share a lot of information, she’s also very lighthearted about her situation. She isn’t afraid to poke fun at herself and her condition. Selma recently did just that, while providing some commentary on what it means to be feminine with a recent photo.
In the picture, Selma is looking at herself in the mirror as she wears a pink and green button-up Thom Browne top with no bottoms. In one hand, she holds a crab-shaped purse that covers her lower half. She touches her shaved head with the other hand.
“Portrait of a lady. @thombrowneny in #calfornia. Shot by @creativerehabnyc #subversive universe #barbie,” she captioned the photo. Someone enjoyed the photo so much, they re-created it with an actual Barbie doll, which Selma posted.
Selma proved that nothing she can go through can take her beauty and grace from her. She recently modeled some pieces from Tommy Hilfiger’s new adaptive line, a collaboration with Zendaya.
Selma has a tough road ahead, one that will inevitably have ups and downs. Her determined spirit and her ability to find light in dark times will surely make all the difference in that journey. There’s a lot of love and support to help her along the way.
