Missy Hendricks always struggled with her weight, but when she got married to an unfaithful man, her battle with food only became worse.
“My maiden name was Blinkenship and they’d call me ‘Battleship’ and that just stuck in my head,” Hendricks tells ABC News.
Within their first year of marriage, Hendricks’ husband began to cheat on her. She rightfully filed for divorce but the pain was still there. Over the course of three years, she got up to 526 pounds at her heaviest.
“I would eat a whole box of Honey Combs [cereal], the family size, just because I was mad at him,” she says. “I felt that I wasn’t good enough. I felt unwanted and I didn’t want to be unwanted for the rest of my life, so I had to change.”
Hendricks changed her lifestyle. After 12 years of healthy habits, she has lost 395 pounds.
But she isn’t the only one who struggled with her weight. Richard Neal weighed 426 pounds, but when doctors told him he wouldn’t live to be 30 and he may never be able to have kids, he knew it was time to change.
It all started when a friend loaned him a workout DVD.
“I was sitting on the couch,” Neal recalls. “I just got done eating a box of cereal and I just thought about that DVD and I was like, ‘Hey, I’ll try it out.’ I had a window air unit and I went and put it on, turned the DVD player on, popped the DVD in, and pressed play.”
Neal lost more than half his body weight on his own. Now he trains others to change their lifestyles — who better than someone that has gone through it himself?
