I’m sure everyone can relate to the ecstatic feeling of finding cash inside the pocket of a jacket. I always feel just a little bit richer when I pull a $20 bill out of a pair of jeans I haven’t worn in months.

So, I can only imagine how 68-year-old Jimmie Smith felt when he found a winning lottery ticket worth $24.1 million tucked away in an old shirt!

Over a year ago, the retired security officer bought a lottery ticket from a New York City bodega.

He had heard the news that it had been almost a year since the winning ticket was sold, and the New York Gaming Commission was still on the search for the lucky person who’d won the fortune.

This inspired him to go to the shirt he had hanging in his closet that held stacks of lottery tickets in the pockets. When he found one ticket from May 23, 2017, he couldn’t believe what he saw: it was the matching numbers.

“I had to stick my head out the window and breathe in some fresh air,” he said. “I was in serious doubt. I really had to convince myself this was real.”

The ticket would have become ineligible just two days later, marking a year since he’d purchased it. Thankfully, he had enough time to claim his prize and will be receiving the money over the next 26 years.
