Miguel Gutirrez dropped out of high school. The young man lived his life in the fast lane. He didn’t care about work or school, and though he was a kind person, he only cared about having fun.
Whether it was fishing with friends and family or partying, Miguel said that since he didn’t know when his life would end, he just wanted to enjoy it. Little did he know that his life motto would be put to the test in a tragic way.
One day, Miguel’s car became pinned under a semi-trailer. The truck drove him about a mile while he was still stuck under it.
Miguel would remain in a coma for 28 days. While doctors knew he would wake up, they didn’t know if he would ever be able to function the same again.
His entire left side was paralyzed. Miguel couldn’t walk, talk, or have much of a memory. After weeks of physical therapy, Miguel left his doctors stunned.
Physical therapist Linda Rusiecki could not believe that someone in such critical condition could literally walk out of the hospital without a cane or wheelchair.
“After a month, to get him to be able to walk out of our facility without using a cane or walker is pretty remarkable,” Linda said. “That’s not something you see in most brain injuries.”
For Miguel, it was all a second chance to live a less selfish life. He is now on track to go to college and become a physical therapist himself.
“I feel like this accident, not at first, but recently… matured me a lot,” he said. “I understand more than what I did back then. I feel like, hey, it’s something God put in my path. He put it in my path for a reason. I don’t know why, but I’ll find out one day.”
