Some animal rescues require more time and effort than others. In this case, a group of rescuers needed to change their plans and work together to keep a choking seal alive.
In the video below, posted on June 30, 2017, the team from Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary moves through the waters of Sandness in Shetland, Scotland. They finally arrive and look for an injured seal.
Suddenly, they spot the creature bobbing in the water. Once they lay eyes on the lobster line coiled around his neck, they jump into action.
One woman dives into the water and does her best to locate the struggling animal below. The crew tries to free the seal from the lobster line in the water, but it’s a failed attempt.
They then decide to try to lift him out of the water, acting carefully so they don’t choke him even more. At this point the seal is terrified. It isn’t a pleasant sight, but it’s the only way they can save him.
Luckily, the team is able to cut him free so he can live to see another day.
