Soon after little Joe was born, his doctors diagnosed him with two conditions that would change his life forever.
He was diagnosed with autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disorder and congenital hepatic fibrosis, which affected his kidneys and liver. The diseases began taking a toll on his life within days. Luckily, his mom, Sarah Lamont, did everything she could — and even risked her life twice — to keep him healthy.
“His kidneys were massively enlarged,” Sarah explains in the video below. “They took up his whole abdomen, crushing his lungs and all his other organs.”
Doctors didn’t know if Joe would survive, but thanks to an attentive crew at the hospital, his conditions were treated properly and consistently. His diseased kidneys were removed when he was only a few days old and he had been on dialysis ever since.
Knowing that Joe’s kidneys and liver were holding him back, Sarah decided to donate her own so he could live.
She says, “I realized you could give a lobe of your liver and I can give a kidney, why can I not give both?”
So, Sarah went through with her life-changing donation and gave Joe a piece of her liver. She eventually donated one of her kidneys to her 4-year-old as well, which put an end to his strict dialysis routine for good.
Check out how Joe is living now in the video below, and please SHARE if you’re glad Sarah acted so selflessly to give her little boy a long, happy life!
