Celebrity moms and dads constantly have their parenting scrutinized by people online.
To some degree, it’s expected. As public figures, some famous people choose to share parts of their lives with strangers. Unfortunately, some of these strangers latch onto anything, harshly criticizing harmless mistakes or even just parenting decisions they disagree with personally.
Jessica Simpson is a common target of mommy-shamers, who have blasted her for everything from letting her daughter wear makeup to waiting four years to cut her son’s hair for the first time. The latest subject of criticism and attacks? Sarah Michelle Gellar.
It all started when Sarah shared photos of her day out with her 5-year-old son, Rocky Prinze. The Buffy the Vampire Slayer star posted pictures on her Instagram story, showing off the matching manicures she and her son had gotten at the nail salon. The photos were screenshot and shared on Twitter by a Mic editor, who then wrote an article praising Sarah’s decision to forego gender norms for a fun day out with her little boy.
Unfortunately, that’s when people began commenting on the article, voicing their negative opinions about Rocky’s manicure — and not because they didn’t like the color he chose.
“5 years old…..you’re brainwashing this kids [sic] with your sick ideologies,” one Facebook user commented. Several others accused Sarah of “crying for attention” by posting photos of the manicure. “Yeah another kid twisted by their parent. Need a license to drive. Apparently we should test for parentage rights as well,” another said.
One commenter took it way too far, suggesting that letting Rocky get a manicure was tantamount to abusing him. “This kind of thing should be outlawed as child abuse! It can cause a child to doubt their true gender,” they wrote.
As of now, Sarah hasn’t acknowledged the response — positive or negative — to her photos in any way.
What do you think of the backlash to Sarah and Rocky’s manicures?
