When most people think of Ron Howard, they think of two characters he played: Opie Taylor, the son of Sheriff Andy Taylor (from The Andy Griffith Show), and Richie Cunningham (from Happy Days).
For years, Ron Howard was a household name. When he left Happy Days to become a director, his costars were excited for him. It turns out Ron is a pretty incredible director — some of his top films include Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind, The Da Vinci Code, Frost/Nixon, and Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Ron Howard has gotten some great accolades for his work. He has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2003, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts. Ten years later, in 2013, he was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame.
While his career was taking off, Ron’s personal life kept him grounded. In 1975, while playing Richie Cunningham, Ron married his high school sweetheart, Cheryl.
Ron Howard met his wife, Cheryl, when he was a junior in high school. They had an instant connection. On June 7, 1975, they tied the knot — and they’re still happily married today. “I met her, and there was never anybody else,” Ron told People.
On March 2, 1981, Ron and Cheryl welcomed their first child together, a daughter named Bryce Dallas Howard. They went on to have three other children, twins daughters Paige and Jocelyn (born in 1985) and son Reed (born in 1987).
Ron and Cheryl tried to raise their kids away from the pressures of Hollywood. In fact, they didn’t let the kids watch TV. Instead, they encouraged them to spend time outside, get involved with activities, and find fun hobbies.
Of course, Bryce was always interested in her dad’s career, so starting when she was 7, her parents let her be an extra in some of his movies. Bryce loved acting — and with Rance Howard and Jean Speegle Howard as grandparents, Clint Howard as an uncle, Ron Howard as a father, and Henry Winkler as a godfather, how could she not?
Bryce spent her summers at a performing arts camp in upstate New York, called Stagedoor Manor (Natalie Portman went there, too). After high school, she went on to study at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, the Stella Adler Conservatory, and various other theater schools and conservatories.
While starring in a play in New York City, Bryce caught the eye of M. Night Shyamalan. Two weeks later, he cast her in The Village, which jump-started her film career. After that performance, she was cast in Lars Von Trier’s Manderlay, then worked with M. Night Shyamalan once again in Lady in the Water.
In 2007, Bryce’s career really took off. She was cast as Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man 3 before taking on a role in Terminator Salvation.
She went on to have roles in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, The Help, and 50/50. In 2015, Bryce landed the lead role as Claire Dearing in Jurassic World, starring alongside Chris Pratt.
Although Bryce is a bona fide movie star now, she has followed in her father’s footsteps and stayed very grounded. Family is very important to Bryce, and she’s still close to her parents and siblings.
In 2006, Bryce married actor Seth Gabel. In 2007, they welcomed their first child together, son Theo. They had another child, daughter Beatrice, in 2012.
One of Bryce’s younger twin sisters, Paige, is also an actress. She had guest roles on 90210 and Medium before appearing in Adventureland, Cheesecake Casserole, and The Employer.
Reed Howard, Bryce and Paige’s younger brother, is a professional golfer. Although he didn’t follow his dad’s footsteps and go into the media world, he looks exactly like his famous father.
Needless to say, Ron and Cheryl are proud of all of their kids. Bryce may have the most name recognition as a Hollywood star, but all four of the Howard children are just as lovely.
Ron Howard is not only a great actor and director, it turns out he’s also an incredible husband, father, and grandfather! The entire Howard family deserves nothing but happiness.
