A regular day at the beach in Florida turned into an incredible miracle when dozens of strangers came together to rescue a family of nine trapped in a dangerous riptide.

When Roberta Ursrey heard her two sons screaming for help in the ocean, she leaped into action. She and other family members swam out to try to pull them back from the rip current in which they’d been caught — then ended up getting caught in it themselves.

As the family struggled, beachgoer Jessica Simmons heard the commotion. At first, she thought it was a shark, but then quickly realized that the entire family was drowning.

There was no lifeguard on duty, so Jessica and her husband knew they needed to do something to help. According to CBS Miami, Jessica said: “These people are not drowning today. It’s not happening. We’re going to get them out.”

Jessica and her husband gathered other beachgoers and began to form a human chain. Soon, 80 strangers linked arms to reach the drowning family. They grabbed the children first and passed them back, one by one, to the beach.

All in all, the Ursrey family was caught in the riptide for 20 minutes. But thanks to the help of strangers, they are going to be OK. Roberta called her rescuers “God’s angels.”
