It’s been over 15 years since the last Legally Blonde movie came out, yet the original film remains a highly relevant and beloved part of pop culture.
It feels like just yesterday that Elle Woods was teaching everyone the “bend and snap” move — you know what I’m talking about!
Reese Witherspoon first played Elle Woods, an out-of-place sorority girl turned Harvard Law student, in 2001, then returned for a sequel in 2003. Now, after much anticipation, she’s finally reprising the role once again.
Reese confirmed that there will officially be a Legally Blonde 3, and she even revealed the anticipated release date.
The 43-year-old actress has been teasing this movie for a while. Last year, she told Ellen DeGeneres that a possible third film was in the works.
“Well, we’re meeting about it. We’re definitely talking about it,” Reese said at the time. “I loved playing that character and she’s so amazing. I don’t know, if you guys want it, then I guess I’ll do it!”
Hello, WE WANT IT, and Reese is doing it, bless her heart. Cut to May 2019, and the script is now complete.
Reese told Entertainment Tonight at the recent Big Little Lies season two premiere that she’s having a blast returning to the role of Elle. The character is all about defying expectations and female empowerment — themes that continue to be relevant in 2019.
“She’s a very beloved character,” Reese told ET. “You just want her to go on a hero’s journey like she does in the first movie, and I’m having a great time working on it.”
Reese also confirmed that the film already has a script but hasn’t begun filming yet. Legally Blonde 3 is slated to debut on Valentine’s Day 2020. We can’t wait!
