The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office in Florida is looking for a cunning criminal they say used a receipt to scam a department store.
Deputies posted security photos of the woman on Facebook to help track her down.
“The woman walked in… with a receipt she found either in a shopping cart, on the ground, or in the trash,” said Skip Conroy, a spokesperson with the sheriff’s office. “Then, she found the selected items on the receipt and brought them to the return counter.”
That’s right, she picked up a receipt, found the items on the list in the store, and returned items she never bought for cash.
“I noticed the cameras today, so I’m kinda surprised,” said Debbie Walsh, a customer. “People are desperate or maybe they haven’t been caught before so they just keep on going until they do.”
The scammer took advantage of busy employees who were swamped during the holiday season. Employees had never encountered this kind of scam before, so they didn’t find anything suspicious about the woman’s claim.
“This is a busy time of year for returns, so this mistake was easily made,” Skip said. “It’s our job to educate the merchants to be aware of this.”
