Longtime American And Canadian Olympic Ice Hockey Rivals Fall In Love And Get Married

by Angela Andaloro

Meghan Duggan and Gillian Apps are no strangers to facing off against one another.

According to the Duluth News Tribune, Meghan is the captain of the US women’s national ice hockey team.

Gillian was formerly the captain of the Canadian women’s national ice hockey team. The two women competed head-to-head in the 2010 and 2014 Olympics.

Now they’re coming together to take on a whole new challenge: marriage!

It seems like a match made in rom-com heaven for the formal rivals to find themselves coming together in what some have joked is pro ice hockey’s own royal wedding. Although the two are not the first couple to find love on the hockey rink — Team USA’s Julie Chu welcomed a baby with Canada’s Caroline Ouellette in late 2017 — their love story is incredibly sweet all the same.

The newlyweds shared photos of their recent wedding, and the pictures of their special day will truly take your breath away.

Who knew that love could result from a fierce rivalry? Team USA’s Meghan Duggan has tied the knot with longtime rival, Canada’s Gillian Apps.

The ladies faced off in both 2010 and 2014 during the Olympics, but it’s clear they left their rivalry out on the rink.

Meghan and Gillian tied the knot just two weeks ago in a beautiful outdoor ceremony in Maine at the William Allen Farm.

The union of the two Olympians brought out other high-profile athletes who have competed in the games, including Kacey Bellamy, Brianna Decker, and Erika Lawler, who served as bridesmaids, according to People.

Meghan took to social media to share some shots from the beautiful day, which she described as “The most incredible day of my entire life ❤️.”

Gillian also shared some shots on Instagram, expressing that there were “Nothing but smiles after this amazing weekend ❤️.”

Both Team USA and Team Canada shared warm wishes for the newlyweds.

It was just earlier this year that Team USA’s Women’s Ice Hockey Team enjoyed a gold medal victory over Canada in the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang. It was their first Olympic gold since 1998!

Of course, the two won’t be facing off on the ice now that they’re married. Gillian has since retired from professional ice hockey.

Interestingly enough, theirs isn’t the first rivalry-turned-romance in women’s ice hockey history.

Team USA’s former captain, Julie Chu, welcomed her first child with her partner of 13 years, Caroline Ouellette, in 2017.

There was no shortage of hockey jokes to go around in reaction to the nuptials.

You could say the couple is, quite literally, #relationshipgoals.

Sure, the bitter rivalry might come up every now and again as hockey season comes around.

But the beautiful union that’s been the result of it is a win for true love everywhere!
