Elvis and Priscilla Presley were married from 1967 to 1973, but some would say that their relationship didn’t have a great start.

Priscilla met the singer when she was just 14 years old and he was 10 years her senior. Before that fateful meeting, though, she had already heard of him through friends, who were big fans.

She recalls that, at the time, she didn’t know how famous he really was. In fact, she wasn’t taken with him. After seeing a magazine photo of him signing a woman’s chest, she thought it was all “really gross.”

Even when she met him, she wasn’t particularly taken by his personality.

According to The Record, she said that when they were introduced, she “didn’t see him as this movie star or this huge iconic singer.”

That wasn’t the Elvis she eventually got to know. Priscilla admitted that she and Elvis bonded after the death of his mother, Gladys.

“I saw him at probably one of the most vulnerable times of his life,” she said. “Losing his mother, and then of course being drafted, which was devastating at the top of his career. So he poured his heart out to me.”

The couple eventually divorced in 1973 due to the star’s infidelities and drug use.
