Princess Diana was an incredible woman.
The late Princess of Wales was known for her many charitable acts, including her groundbreaking and historic work with the AIDS/HIV-positive community. Throughout her years as a member of the royal family, she became an internationally beloved public figure. There’s a reason she was frequently called the “People’s Princess” in the media!
But above all, Diana was known for the love she had for her two sons, Princes William and Harry.
To this day, the two princes often speak about their beloved late mom and the impact her legacy has on their lives to this day. As it turns out, the way Diana broke the news to Prince William about the end of her marriage to his dad may actually have directly impacted the way he goes about love and relationships.
Diana and Prince Charles separated in 1992, according to Popsugar, in the midst of affair rumors on both sides. Charles’ ongoing affair with his former girlfriend, Camilla Parker Bowles, was common knowledge, and he eventually married Camilla several years after Diana’s untimely death.
In 1995 — less than a year before her divorce from Charles went through in August 1996 — Diana sat for her infamous televised interview with BBC1 Panorama’s Martin Bashir. As part of the candid discussion about her failed marriage with Prince Charles, Diana revealed how she handled the public revelation of Charles’ adultery in the news, after the prince admitted his affair to writer Jonathan Dimbleby in 1994.
According to the BBC, Diana said:
“I went to the school and put it to William, particularly, that if you find someone you love in life, you must hang onto it and look after it, and if you were lucky enough to find someone who loved you, then one must protect it. William asked me what had been going on, and could I answer his questions, which I did.
He said, was that [the affair] the reason why our marriage had broken up? And I said, well, there were three of us in this marriage, and the pressure of the media was another factor, so the two together were very difficult. But although I still loved Papa, I couldn’t live under the same roof as him, and likewise with him.”
Though William hasn’t ever said it directly, based on his long-lasting and strong relationship with Kate Middleton, one can imagine that the young boy took his mom’s words about love to heart.
