Princess Diana’s life has been turned into a musical. Diana had its world premiere at San Diego’s La Jolla Playhouse last March.
Now it’s heading to Broadway’s Longacre Theatre.
The musical is set in 1981. It follows the late princess’s life leading up to her unforgettable royal wedding to Prince Charles. The musical will explore elements of their marriage. It also goes into the darker times, like Prince Charles’ public affair with Camilla Parker Bowles and the predatory presence of the press in Diana’s life at the height of her days in the royal family.
The musical will star Jeanna de Waal as Diana.
The actress, who has been on Broadway before in Kinky Boots and American Idiot, also played the role in the San Diego production. Roe Hartrampf will play Prince Charles, and Erin Davie will play Camilla Parker Bowles. Two-time Tony Award-winner Judy Kaye will portray Queen Elizabeth.
Diana is brought to life by Joe DiPietro and David Bryan. The two were also behind 2009’s highly praised Memphis, which took home four Tony Awards. David is also the keyboard player for Bon Jovi. The music in the show will fit the setting, with both classical melodies and pop and rock tunes from the era.
Previews for the musical are set to begin on March 2, 2020. Opening night is scheduled for March 31.
