When you think about the royal family’s fashion, the focus is usually on Kate Middleton or, more recently, Meghan Markle.

The two women are constantly making headlines with their elegant and fashionable outfit choices. That was the case when the two appeared side by side publicly for the first time, during the family’s Christmas retreat to the Queen’s Sandringham Estate. People couldn’t get over just how different Kate and Meghan’s Christmas styles were!

But now, another royal family member is in the news for his unusual choice of clothing. Prince William visited a hospital earlier this week as part of his first royal engagement of 2018 — and he wore hospital scrubs.

The Duke of Cambridge visited the Royal Marsden Hospital in the Chelsea neighborhood of London on January 10, 2018, where he donned scrubs and a medical mask while watching the doctors perform two robotic surgeries. The soon-to-be father of three has been the President of the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust since 2007, according to the Daily Mail.

Professor Vinidh Paleri and his medical team performed a minimally invasive robotic surgery on a patient, while the 35-year-old royal watched. “Scrubbing up” is the necessary precaution that anyone who will be in an operating theater must take. William also joked that operating the high-tech robot was just like a video game.

“It’s the same as the PlayStation gear,” he said following the surgery, according to People. “You can see all the doctors have done PlayStation. They let me watch but not to have a go.” Prince William later said that watching the robot at work was “fascinating” in its precision.

During his visit, the prince followed in the footsteps of his mom, who was previously the President of the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust from 1989 until her death in 1997. The hospital was also the site of Princess Diana‘s first solo, official royal engagement, which occurred shortly after she’d married Prince Charles back in 1982. On another hospital visit to the Harefield Hospital in Middlesex in 1996, Diana also wore scrubs just like her son to witness a heart operation.

This is yet another way that Diana’s two boys are carrying on her humanitarian legacy!
