The first topic the pair addressed was their proposal. Earlier today, when members of the press had asked for details during their engagement photo call, Prince Harry said that those details would come later. During their interview with the BBC, the couple explained that the proposal was surprisingly quaint and normal — but still very romantic.
The prince revealed that he had proposed in Nottingham Cottage (where the two will live together) earlier in November, during a “cozy” night in when they had been roasting chicken. Meghan described the moment as “an amazing surprise […] so sweet and natural and very romantic.”
In fact, when Harry got down on one knee, Meghan was so excited that she barely let him finish proposing — she wanted to say yes right away!
The couple also talked about the secretive beginnings of their romance, which started in July 2016.
They explained that they had met after being set up on a blind date by a mutual female friend (whose name they declined to reveal, wanting to protect her privacy).
Interestingly enough, Prince Harry had never even heard of his future bride before they met!
Meghan starred on the USA show Suits for seven seasons before announcing her departure earlier this month. But despite reports that Harry had watched the show and had a crush on her before they ever met, the Prince confirmed in the interview that he hadn’t ever seen the series.
He did reveal that he was “beautifully surprised” when he finally met Meghan in person and knew he needed to step up his game if he wanted to woo her.
After meeting, the two knew that they wanted to spend more time together. Because the Prince was set to take a trip to Africa and Meghan was set to begin filming for Suits, they had a limited amount of time, so it was just “three, maybe four” weeks into their courtship, after only two dates, that Harry persuaded Megan to join him in Botswana!
The prince revealed that the two camped out under the stars in the African country for five days. Throughout their 16-month relationship prior to the engagement, they managed to never go more than two weeks without seeing one another.
Both agreed that the five months they had to get to know each other before their relationship was made public were crucial in building a strong relationship.
Meghan explained that everything she learned about Harry and his family was directly from him, and not through the media.
The enormity of the public’s reaction to their relationship was also touched upon. The Ppince explained that he’d tried to warn Meghan about the level of scrutiny they’d be subjected to, but that neither of them knew it would be as intense as it was.
When asked about the focus on her ethnicity in the press and from the public, Meghan called it “disheartening,” but explained that she was proud of who she is and where she’d come from — though she and Prince Harry had never focused on that in their relationship.
Meghan also confirmed something that had been widely rumored earlier this year, that she had met the Queen in person, a couple of times.
The actress explained that meeting the Queen had been “incredible.”
“To be able to meet her through his lens — not just with his honor and respect for her as the monarch, but the love that he has for her as his grandmother — all of those layers have been so important for me, so that when I met her, I had such a deep understanding, and of course incredible respect for being able to have that time with her. She’s an incredible woman,” Meghan said.
Prince Harry also joked that the Queen’s beloved corgis took to Meghan right away, even lying across her feet during tea.
The two also discussed the design of Meghan’s ring.
Harry explained that the ring is yellow gold (because that’s Meghan’s favorite). The main stone was sourced from Botswana (the location of their whirlwind romantic vacation together), with smaller diamonds on either side from Princess Diana’s jewelry collection “to make sure that she’s with us on this crazy journey together.”
The couple confirmed they’d each met the other’s family over the course of their relationship. Meghan explained that she’d met both sides of Harry’s family and that it had been particularly important to her to meet Princess Diana’s side as well.
Harry explained that Prince William and Duchess Kate had been “longing” to meet Meghan. The bride-to-be explained that her future sister-in-law had been “wonderful” to her, and the Prince said that both William and Kate had been “amazing” and “fantastic support.”
Perhaps the most heartwarming moment of the interview — and the note they ended it on — was the couple’s discussion of what Princess Diana would think of their relationship and how important it was for them to pay tribute to her with Meghan’s ring.
I think in being able to meet his aunts and […] just different people who were so important to his mom, I’m able to, in some way, know a part of her through them — and of course, through him. And it’s incredibly special. And, you know, to be able to have [the engagement ring] which sort of links where [Prince Harry] come[s] from and Botswana (which is important to us) — it’s perfect.
Prince Harry revealed that he believes Meghan and Diana would have been “thick as thieves, without question” and “best friends.” He explained that it was days like today when he really missed having her around to share the happy news, but the pair felt that she was with them.
“I’m sure she’s with us, yeah, you know, jumping up and down somewhere else,” Prince Harry joked.
