Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were recently slammed for their use of private planes for travel throughout the summer.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are outspoken advocates for environmental causes, so many people thought that the use of the jets was hypocritical. Friends of the couple, including Elton John and Ellen DeGeneres, spoke out in their defense. Now Prince Harry is speaking on the matter himself.
“I came here by commercial. I spend 99% of my life traveling the world by commercial,” the Duke of Sussex proclaimed at a travel industry conference in Amsterdam.
“Occasionally, there needs to be an opportunity based on a unique circumstance to ensure my family are safe, and it’s genuinely as simple as that.”
Harry did acknowledge that everyone has room to improve, himself included. “We can all do better and while no one is perfect, we all have a responsibility for our own individual impact,” he added. “The question is what we do to balance it out.” Harry and Meghan do that by purchasing carbon offsets to balance out the impact of their flights.
To that end, Harry also announced a new sustainable travel initiative, Travalyst. “#Travalyst aims to make travel more sustainable, to help protect destinations and benefit communities long into the future, and to enable consumers to make more environmental friendly choices whilst traveling,” he detailed in the announcement on their Instagram account.
