In December 2018, a 56-year-old woman in Jonesboro, Arkansas, shot a 41-year-old man when he tried to enter her apartment to check on her well-being.
After the shooting, the armed woman refused to surrender. Instead, she locked herself in her apartment while authorities posted up out front.
Hours passed, and the police continued trying to negotiate with her. Eventually, a K-9 officer named Gabo arrived on scene to help arrest her and bring an end to the dangerous standoff.
Then, a horrific turn of events took place. The suspect shot Gabo five times, then focused her gunfire on his fellow officers.
Gabo — who is trained in drug detection and patrol work — was left fighting for his life, with bruising around his lungs and liver damage.
Gabo’s handler, Erik Johnson, was beside himself with grief and prepared himself for the worst.
But Gabo miraculously survived the shooting and went on to receive the K9 Medal of Valor — all thanks to one incredible, innovative and life-saving piece of clothing.
