For a pet owner, there is nothing scarier than not knowing where your pet is and if they are safe.

Constable Mike Wakefield went through this terrible situation in 2015, when his police dog, Thames, went missing during a routine search-and-rescue drill.

Thames, a 4-year-old German shepherd, was missing for seven days. Which is a very long time for someone who is worried.

During that time, there were extensive searches in which everyone was looking for Thames, just hoping to find him.

Mike and rescue volunteer John McCann followed fresh tracks in New Zealand’s Tararua Range for two days before they found Thames.

Sure enough, Mike spotted Thames. They were so happy to learn the dog was still alive and in good condition, all things considered.

Thames had lost a little bit of weight and had a sore foot, but after seeing a vet and getting some time off, Thames was then cleared to get back to work.
