Over 100,000 Strangers Sign Dog Owner’s Petition For Food Stamp Benefits To Include Pets

If you have pets, chances are you consider them to be just as much a part of your family as any human.

For this reason, pet owner Edward B. Johnston Jr. created a petition to extend food stamp benefits to include pet food.

The petition is called “Don’t Let Pets Starve — Include Pet Food In SNAP benefits.” As of January 31, 2018, the petition has already garnered over 119,000 signatures and is quickly approaching its 120,000-supporter goal.

WABC reports that people who are currently eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) are only allowed to use their credit toward food for human family members.

Pet owners are fighting for this cause to alleviate the financial burden of buying pet food for low-income families. That would in turn make it easier for them to keep their beloved pets and keep more animals out of shelters.

The petition page outlines that over 40 million low-income people in the United States rely on SNAP to feed their families.

So, the logic goes, if they can’t feed their families without assistance, they probably are unable to feed their pets at all.

The truth of the matter is that people of all socioeconomic backgrounds and statuses enjoy the company of pets, and no animal deserves to go hungry.

Be sure to SHARE this petition with anyone you know who would support this initiative!
