Eight-year-old Maddison Mertz loved to play in the park across the street from her family’s home.

When she passed away this spring following a fight with a rare form of cancer, a neighbor named Mike Amundsen wanted to find a way to honor the young girl.

“When you keep someone in your prayers for that long, you kind of feel like you know them a little bit, even though we didn’t know them,” Mikes says.

While walking by the Victoria Watermark Park by the Mertz’s home, he had the idea to ask the city council to rename the park in honor of Maddison. “I said I think that sign would be a little more appropriately named if it was Maddison Park,” Mike says.

Mike started an online petition, which quickly grew to surpass 27,000 signatures. After that, on July 10, 2017, he went in front of the city council to propose the name change.

As you’ll see in the footage below, the city council unanimously voted in favor of the name change! “Although it’s a little outside of our normal process, it was the right thing to do to approve it,” Victoria Mayor Tom Funk says.

“It’s just such a cool place that people can come and just reflect,” Maddison’s father Zack says. It’s so amazing to see a community come together for a family who has lost so much.
