When French special forces entered an apartment in Saint-Denis, France, they were met with a large amount of gunfire and armed resistance, in a showdown that lasted for several hours. One member of the police team was Diesel, a 7-year-old Belgian shepherd dog.
After bravely entering the building, Diesel was tragically killed by those holed up in the apartment. As one French Twitter user put it, Diesel 'died to defend our colors.'
The Police Nationale tweeted, 'Diesel, a seven-year-old Malinois, police dog for RAID [France's anti-terrorist police unit], was killed by terrorists in the ongoing operation.' Due in part to Diesel's bravery, no other police were killed in the operation, though five were injured. The outpouring of support and love for Diesel's actions was powerful and immediate.
Tributes from around the world have been made all over the news and social media. In fact, a Twitter hashtag '#JeSuisChien' has gone absolutely viral. The term is translated as 'I'm a dog' in a massive show of support and gratitude for Diesel's brave sacrifice.
