Owner Helps 1-Year-Old Golden Retriever Redefine The ‘Cone Of Shame’ With Silly Costumes

by Angela Andaloro

You can’t help but feel a little bad for a dog who gets stuck wearing the “cone of shame.” Usually, it’s for the dog’s own good, but that doesn’t stop them from looking sad while it’s happening.

One woman and her roommate decided to get creative when her 1-year-old dog was sentenced to the cone.

Kaitlyn Cotter’s golden retriever, Gus, was recently neutered. Following the procedure, he had to wear a cone for two weeks. During that time, Kaitlyn and her roommate, Hilary Turk, decided to think of fun ideas to decorate Gus’ cone of shame. The result was nine silly, unique costumes. Some of them were Kaitlyn and Hilary’s own ideas, while others were found on the internet.

A few of the costumes took as little as 15 minutes to put together. Others, like Gus’ basketball hoop, required some extra craftsmanship and time.

“The basketball net took us the longest because we were trying to figure out how to do that,” Kaitlyn explained to Inside Edition. The net was made by hand from yarn. It was one of many photos from the series of costumes that went viral online.

The silly costumes gave them something entertaining to do with Gus, who couldn’t go out for walks during his recovery time. Kaitlyn was impressed with how much he got into it. “As it went on, he actually liked it. When it got time to put the costume on, we were teaching him to sit and stay. He handled it pretty well,” she recalled.
