No one knew who the man with only one leg was when he leapt into action. No one knew why he was rolling towards the car crash instead of away from it, heading straight towards the overturned car.
But after his actions, a lot of people in Phoenix, Arizona, would come to know the name Arthur Belyeu.
Angel Newman was a witness to the terrible car crash that occurred. He had been pumping gas when he heard the crash. That’s when he saw Arthur rolling towards the overturned car.
“He jumped out of his wheelchair, with one leg and he climbed into that car. I think it might of been him that cut the seat belts, but he was back there pulling the people out of the car,” Angel recalled.
Angel captured video of the aftermath of the crash, and the footage showed Arthur sitting on the curb, dusty and dirty.
“This man right here is a hero,” Angel said in the video.
Fox 10 Phoenix was able to get in touch with Arthur and hear his side of the story.
“As soon as I see that [the crash], I threw my soda down, rolled over to the scene, got the back hatch down and went in and started extricating people from the car,” he recalled. “I’ll do anything I can to help my fellow brothers and sisters, anytime.”
